Lionel Macy's Department Store Special

LIONEL DEPARTMENT STORE SPECIAL “MACY’S SPECIAL” 254E, 605, 605, 606 Passenger Set. c.1930-32.

A desirable set. By definition a department store special is a set produced by Lionel to be sold by a specific store and that the store name appears on the set.

The set consists of a Lionel 254E in orange with black frame, brass plates and reverse unit. The cars are orange with interior lighting, cream window inserts, pea green doors and nickel journals.  This differs from orange cars used in cataloged Lionel sets which had cream doors that matched the window inserts.  The observation car has the oval brass “Macy Special” drumhead on the end railing so the engine and cars are all unique to this set. The orange 254E only came in the Macy’s set.

The set is in nice original condition. The set has been track tested and runs smoothly and quietly. The Macy’s sets came with Lionel’s pendulum reverse unit which can be temperamental, however this set reversed reliably when tested. Unusual for these early reverse units. The lights in the cars work but flicker a bit when running
